Aluminium welding in Hull

Castings, tanks, frames and marine work in aluminium.

01 · Overview

Aluminium welded with the process and filler the alloy needs.

Aluminium conducts heat quickly, forms an oxide skin instantly, and some alloys lose strength next to the weld. Welding it well means AC TIG or pulsed MIG, the right filler and clean metal.

We weld castings, wrought alloys, tanks, frames and marine parts in the workshop or on site.

Alloys and fillers

6082-T6Loses 30 to 50 percent of its strength in the heat-affected zone. We place welds where that matters least.
5083Keeps close to parent strength after welding. The alloy to specify for welded structures.
Fillers5356 for most 5xxx and 6xxx joints. 4043A where crack sensitivity or casting repair calls for it.
CastingsOil-soaked and porous castings are cleaned and preheated before welding. We tell you if a casting is not worth saving.

How a job runs

  1. Photo firstA clear photo of the crack or part tells us whether it is weldable and whether it is a workshop or site job.
  2. PriceFixed price for a repair, quoted in writing before we start.
  3. Weld and checkWelded, dressed and inspected. Pressure tested where the part holds fluid.

Oil and porosity are the usual reasons an aluminium repair fails. We deal with both first.

Aluminium welding questions

Not covered here? Call or WhatsApp and ask.

Can you weld cast aluminium?

Usually. It depends on the alloy, how much oil has soaked in and where the crack runs. Castings are cleaned back to sound metal and preheated. If one is not worth welding, we say so before we start.

MIG or TIG for aluminium?

TIG for thin sections, castings and anything on show. Pulsed MIG for thicker sections and longer runs. We choose for the job.

Can you weld aluminium to steel?

Not by fusion welding. The two metals do not mix. We can bolt, rivet or use a bimetal transition piece where the design allows.

Does welding weaken 6082 aluminium?

Yes, in the heat-affected zone. Good design puts the weld where the load is lowest, or uses 5083 instead.

Can you repair an aluminium fuel or water tank?

Yes. The tank is drained, cleaned and purged before welding, then pressure tested afterwards.

Can you weld aluminium on site?

Yes. We bring our own power, shelter the weld from wind and clean the joint back to bright metal before welding.
