3D scanning and reverse engineering

Worn or obsolete parts scanned and rebuilt as clean CAD.

01 · Overview

Most of these jobs start with a part that has no drawing.

Obsolete parts, worn components and plant that was never documented. We scan the part, in the workshop or on site, and rebuild it as a clean, editable CAD solid with proper features rather than a mesh.

From the model, the part can be machined, printed, fabricated or cast, corrected where the original wore or broke, and the drawing kept so the next replacement can be made from the file.

02 · Where scanning is used

The jobs scanning is used for.

01

Parts with no drawings

The original maker is gone or never supplied drawings. We scan the part and produce a drawing.

02

Obsolete components

Replacement parts for machines the OEM no longer supports, modelled from the worn original and corrected back to the intended geometry.

03

Inspection against CAD

Scan a manufactured part, overlay it on the model, and get a colour deviation map and a report showing where it is out.

04

Fitting to existing plant

Scan the space a new part must fit into, including the bits that are not square, and design to the scan so it fits the space.

05

Worn surfaces

Shafts, bores and wear faces measured for wear, then remade, or built up by welding and machined back to size.

06

Digitising for CNC and printing

Hand-made patterns, castings and one-off parts captured so they can be reproduced on a machine.

Accuracy, size and outputs

EquipmentHandheld structured-light scanner, used in the workshop or carried to site
AccuracyVerified deviation of the finished model stated per job, not a brochure figure; tenths of a millimetre on most mechanical parts
Part sizeSmall components to whole machines; large objects scanned in sections and stitched
On siteFixed plant, vehicles and structures scanned where they stand
OutputsSTL mesh, STEP or native parametric solid, 2D drawings, inspection report
TurnaroundSmall parts scanned and modelled within days; larger jobs quoted with a date

How a job runs

  1. ScanThe part is sprayed if it is shiny, referenced and scanned. On site if it cannot be moved.
  2. ModelThe mesh is rebuilt as a proper parametric solid with true cylinders, planes and threads, not a surface wrapped round the scan.
  3. MakeThe new model is machined, printed, fabricated or cast, and the drawing is kept for the next time.

The accuracy we quote is the finished model checked against the part.

Scanner resolution is not the same as model accuracy, so we measure the result and state the figure for each job.

3D scanning questions

Not covered here? Call or WhatsApp and ask.

How accurate is the scanning?

We quote the verified deviation of the finished model against the part, not the scanner resolution. For most mechanical parts that is tenths of a millimetre. Critical fits are checked with callipers and gauges as well.

Do I get an STL or a STEP file?

Either or both. The STL mesh is what the scanner produces. The STEP solid is what you need to machine or modify the part, and producing it is the reverse engineering.

Can you scan on site?

Yes. The scanner is handheld and runs from a laptop. Plant, vehicle chassis and structures are scanned where they are.

What does 3D scanning cost?

It depends on the size of the part and how much modelling follows. A small component scanned and modelled is a few hours of work. We quote a fixed price per job.

Can you make the replacement part as well?

Yes, and that is usually the point. The new model goes to machining, metal or polymer printing, or fabrication, whichever suits the part.

Can you improve the part rather than just copy it?

Yes. A worn or broken part usually failed for a reason. We model the intended geometry, then thicken, re-radius or change material where it failed.
